Jenolan Caves are one of the less visited attractions in the Blue Mountains. Off the main tourist trail and viewed as difficult to get to, the caves are relatively undiscovered by the masses of tourists that descend on the better-known locations of Katoomba and Leura.

Where

Jenolan Caves are located in the Jenolan Valley, roughly halfway between Katoomba and Oberon. The only ways to get to Jenolan Caves is by private transport or as part of an organised tour. There are no public transport options. The Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves Motorcoach Day Tour is a popular option, though there are tours that offer visitors longer at the caves, and accommodation available for longer visits.

If you’re driving to the caves be sure to take the road carefully. The way down into the caves is a narrow, winding road with limited visibility. If in doubt, head to Oberon first – that way down is much less dangerous.

What

Jenolan Caves are some of the oldest limestone caves in the world. First discovered in 1838 and became known as a tourist destination from the 1880s. Today 11 caves are open to the public, with more being constantly discovered. Limestone formations, an underground river and beautiful bushwalks in the surrounding area characterise the caves. From your first glimpse of the cave systems as you drive through the Grand Arch to marvelling in the history of heritage listed Caves House you’ll be glad you came.

The most famous of Jenolan’s caves is the Lucas Cave. The tour lasts an hour and a half and runs several times a day. It’s one of three ‘Wonders of the Underworld’ tours – caves that are large, easy to navigate and include lots of features. The ‘Jewels of Jenolan’ caves include the Orient, Temple of Baal and Diamond Caves, with some of the system’s most intricate formations. If you have the time, book an extended tour of one of these caves to see as much as possible.

‘Magic of Jenolan’ tours comprise the rest of the cave system open for public viewing. These take smaller groups into fragile caves with gorgeous features including the underground river. Also included in this round-up of tours is Jenolan’s very own ghost tour.

When

Jenolan Caves is open year-round, with special tour timetables during NSW school holidays. The best way to see what caves fit into your schedule is to check out the Jenolan Caves tours timetable on their website.
